Oct. 26 was the 10th fall Recycling Drop-Off coordinated by Yampa Valley Sustainability Council, and our community continues to show its passion for recycling right. In the Meadows Parking Lot, 439 households recycled electronics and 515 households came to the Upper Knoll Lot to recycle household hazardous waste, lightbulbs, batteries, scrap metal, yard waste, bikes, skis and more.
We collected 27,423 pounds of electronics at the fall event, which prevented 38,225 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. Many of the items you brought to the drop-off will stay in the community for reuse, such as clothing. Some will be recycled into new products, such as dog beds made from mattresses and furniture made from skis.
Recycling all these resources eliminates the need to use virgin materials and helps fight climate change. Thank you for making the effort to do the right thing with your recyclable and reusable items.
The Sustainability Council would also like to thank the 90 volunteers, 18 recycling partners and all our generous sponsors and donors for your support of the fall Recycling Drop-Off. We are especially grateful to the Steamboat Resort for donating the use of the Meadows and Knoll parking lots. We couldn’t do this community event without all of you.
We are also grateful for everyone who donated at the Drop-Off. Your contributions help fund the coordination and logistics of the event and help subsidize the waste hauling, keeping recycling fees low and the event accessible to all.
If you weren’t able to make the fall drop-off, a full list of local year-round recycling options— from electronics to paint — is available on the Yampa Valley Recycles app. For example, you can recycle up to five gallons of paint at any time at Ace Hardware and Sherwin-Williams. Search the app online at http://www.yampavalleyrecycles.org or download it for free to your smartphone or tablet.
