As part of the organization’s 2018 Climate Action campaign, Yampa Valley Sustainability Council’s Commuter Challenge inspired 127 community members of all ages to walk, bike, bus or carpool from May 27 – June 27. This friendly competition encouraged people to leave the car at home–or carpool–to reduce our community’s carbon footprint.
Family teams, adult teams and solo riders recorded their alternative transportation miles and trips in a competition to win prizes, such as Harvest skis, Bjg Agnes and Honey Stinger product, Ski Haus gift cards and gear, and plenty of other schwag donated by local businesses. In total, participants took 1,646 trips and traveled 10,952 miles using alternative transportation saving 536 gallons of gas and preventing 10,523 lbs. of carbon emissions. Participants took the challenge seriously and worked to green their commute. Eleven solo bike riders logged more than 100 miles, and numerous teams and individuals logged several hundred to more than a thousand miles during the month-long challenge.
First place participants in several categories included the following:
- Youth with most trips: Will Hall – 41 trips
- Family team with most trips: The Landers Family – 133 trips
- Individual with most bike, walk and bus miles: Wes Hunter – 440 miles
- Adult team with most bike, walk and bus miles: Ski Haus Team #1 – 456 miles
- Adult team with most carpool miles: Les Limas – 1,460 miles
- Adults team with most trips: Ski Haus Team #4 – 87 trips
