Yesterday’s 2nd annual Youth Green Team Eco Summit hosted by YVSC and lead by partners from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Colorado State Forest Service, Colorado State University Extension Office, Community Agriculture Alliance, Friends of the Yampa, and Rocky Mountain Youth Corps, attracted a record number of 32 kids from 4 schools in the county: Soda Creek Elementary fifth graders, Strawberry Park Middle School, Steamboat Springs High School, and North Routt Charter School, as well as the Colorado Mountain College Sustainability Program’s students who helped facilitate the topic break out sessions.
After enthusiastic presentations from the partners about topics and careers in their field, students broke into four groups based on their interests and discussed events, topics, projects, ideas, and improvements that excited them. CMC facilitators had to write quickly to keep up, as ideas were flying through the CMC Auditorium like buzzing mosquitoes. After percolating for an hour, leaders from each group presented to the assembly about their topics.
This year’s chosen breakout sessions were new topics and included Activism, Local Food, Natural Resources, and Wildlife and Water. Students also committed to attending and volunteering for Earth Hour (March 29), River Clean Up Day (TBA May-June, based on water levels), ReTree Steamboat (June 9), and the RMYC’s Service Learning Corps, and working with the organizations present to further enrich these events.
