One of the things that makes the Yampa Valley so special is our deep connection to nature. We all live so close to some of the most beautiful places in the world and have the privilege to recreate in them every day, and that privilege comes with an obligation to protect those places. When we see our rivers reaching peak flows of half what they should be, our summers getting hotter and drier,
and our snowpack diminishing, it is our responsibility to act. Luckily, in recent years we have seen people stepping up for climate. Since 2017, YVSC has engaged more than 1,800 volunteers who have donated more than 11,000 hours of their time, and our local branch of Fridays For Future has seen about 300 students attend their protests. The people of the Yampa Valley are moving from simply recreating in the outdoors to actively trying to save it.

We will be hosting a special screening of Protect our Winters’ recent documentary, Purple Mountains. Through this film, “pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones seeks common ground about climate change in the heart of America’s purple states.” Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to ask a panel of experts questions about sustainability, climate issues, and the way in which it relates to how we recreate outdoors. Attendees will also be given the opportunity to register to vote or call local representatives.
