ENERGY AND TRANSPORTATION

Moving towards low-carbon energy and transportation futures in the Yampa Valley

Statewide and local transitions to clean energy are vital foundations of climate action. The power sector and transportation are the two largest producers of greenhouse gas emissions in Routt County and statewide, making them leading priorities and opportunities for “green economy” planning and action.

Investing in well-planned, inclusive clean energy infrastructure and technology has the potential to increase economic growth while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Our Energy and Transportation Priority Area spans: Renewable Energy Adoption, Commercial/Residential Energy Efficiency, Green Building Technologies, Environmental Justice/Energy Justice for Underserved Community Members, and Low-Carbon Transportation.

YVSC PRIORITY AREAS

Commercial & Residential Energy Assessments

Improving energy efficiency in residential and commercial buildings is an important way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save on operating costs and create safer and more comfortable living and working environments. YVSC enters into Work Agreements with BPI-Certified Building Analysts to provide Routt and Moffat County residents with energy assessment services that educate building owners on current energy use rates and ways to save energy through recommended efficiency improvements. YVSC partners with local governments and utility partners to make assessments affordable and accessible.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Through partnerships, programs and education, YVSC is working to support transitions to renewable energy in the Yampa Valley. Solar power is a leading option for “self-reliant renewable energy” in Routt County and YVSC works to increase local access to and adoption of solar. With our regional shift away from coal, YVSC serves as an organization of capacity for the state-led Just Transition efforts to support the needs of coal-reliant community transitions in Colorado’s future energy economy.

GREEN BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES

A ‘green’ building is a building that, in its design, construction or operation, reduces or eliminates negative environmental impacts. Green building technologies and design can include: efficient use of energy, water and other resources; use of materials that are non-toxic, ethical and sustainable; consideration of the environment in design, construction and operation; a design that enables adaptation and resilience to a changing environment; among others. Through programs and education, YVSC convenes designers/builders, homeowners, and green building professionals to learn about and implement green building solutions that work in our area.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE / ENERGY EFFICIENCY FOR UNDERSERVED COMMUNITY MEMBERS

Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. This goal will be achieved when everyone enjoys the same degree of protection from environmental and health hazards, and equal access to the decision-making process to have a healthy environment in which to live, learn, and work. YVSC strives to address cases and systemic-drivers of energy-related environmental injustice in the Yampa Valley region.

LOW-CARBON TRANSPORTATION

The state of Colorado has set ambitious targets for moving the state toward an electrified transportation future. Transportation is currently the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions. Transitioning our transportation systems and personal vehicle use towards electric vehicles (EVs) while supporting alternative and reduced transportation practices will dramatically reduce emissions.
